Game Recaps

2019-2020 Season

Buffalo Recap

People might ask. How can u have success if u don’t win ? We’ll, u can, especially the Boys Varsity Basketball team. The team traveled last weekend up to Buffalo NY for a showcase between teams in Buffalo and teams from the city.  The Crusaders were scheduled against St. Mary’s of Lancaster and Hamburg High School.
First came St. Mary’s. This was a close game throughout. Unfortunately the Crusaders came up short. 62-59. They were led by David Crismali with 19 pts  and 4 rebounds. Chris Chen added 8 pts and 5 rebounds. We had two opportunities to try and tie the game but came up short.

Hamburg was our next opponent. They are a public school from Buffalo. The Crusaders got off too a good start, but then came foul trouble as Damiano Cottone, David Crismali, Chris Chen had to sit most of the 1st half. 2nd half was exciting as the game was tied with two minutes until Hamburg hit a bank 3 pointer with the shot clock running down to take a 3 pt lead. Cathedral fell short 63-55.
But, overall this was a great trip. The boys enjoyed themselves and were on there best behavior. Hopefully this trip will help us as we start our league games.

It was a good weekend for the boys Varsity basketball team. The boys finally won the ” The Avenues” tournament. This was there 3rd invitation to this tournament. I guess the 3rd time is a chime. The boys won on Thursday night 58-41 against Calhoun high school. The boys came out a little sluggish but managed to tough out a victory. The Crusaders were led by David C with 15 pts and Chris C added 10pts and 7 rebounds.

Saturday night the Crusaders took care of Mary McDowell 84-65. The team came out fast and furious. Led 38-20 at halftime and never looked back. The team had 3 boys in double digits. Bryan F 19 pts, Menzo T with 18 pts and David C with 15 pts. It was an all around effort. Sophomore Damaiano C had 6 pts, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist. Franky C had 9 pts and 3 assists. Ronald R came off the bench with high energy. He had 5 pts, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. This improves the Varsity to 2-0.
There next game is home on Monday 11/25 at 4pm vs UNIS and Monday 12/2 home at 4:30 vs Molloy “B”.
Yesterday, the Crusaders suffered their 1st loss of the season. They were defeated 59-53 to “The Avenue School” in the championship game of their tournament. The boys struggled through the 1st three quarters, unable to hit many shots. Then a light bulb went off in their heads. Trailing by 20 points entering the 4th quarter, the Crusaders put on a surge to cut the deficit to 5 with 2 minutes left. Unfortunately, that was as close as they came. The Varsity’s next game is December 2nd at Martin Luther High School. Junior, Matthew Smith, led the team with 15 points, and 6 rebounds.

The Crusaders started the season off on a high note as they defeated Calhoun High School last night 58-55 in “The Avenues” pre season tournament.

The team was short handed due to the fact that the Juniors were on retreat, so it was time for the Seniors to shine as well as a couple of Sophomores. All eight players played a major role in the victory.

It didn’t start out well as they fell behind early 13-4. But, Mikey Remon drained a few 3 pointers. The Crusaders still trailed by 1 pt . The 2nd half was a whole new game. The Crusaders went out of the zone and into man defense. They created steals and easy baskets. They built a 13 point lead only to see it dwindle down to 1 pt with 2 minutes left. But, the Crusaders showed the toughness and pulled out a hard fought win. Coach Naumann and Kondyra were proud by the effoert the team showed. Once again, this is a new era for Cathedral Prep Varsity Basketball.

Varsity will look to bring home a championship tomorrow as they play “The Avenue School.”
