JV Recaps 2019-2020
The JV basketball team defeated FDR 50-38. Joe Fitzgerald was high scorer with 18 points and had 8 rebounds. JA Van Wallendael chipped in with 8 points and 9 rebounds. Nick Guillen and Miles Tucker both had 7 points and 4 assists, while Nick also had 7 deflections. Vinsanity Gallagher chipped in with 7 deflections and intense defense.
The JV basketball team came in 2nd place in the Martin Luther basketball tournament.
In the first game, Cathedral defeated MLHS 69-32 – Frank Camastro had 20 points and Chris El Carnicero Chen added 16 as the JV defeated MLHS in the first round of their tourney. Alex the Roadrunner Chen had 9 points and 8 deflections and was awarded the Crusader “C”. Joe Fitzgerald scored 8 points and 11 rebounds.
In the championship game, LuHi defeated Cathedral 80-60 – Frank Camastro had 14 points and 4 assists, while Nick Guillen had 12 points and 4 assists. Brian Flannery had 10 points and played very aggressively to earn the Crusader “C”. Frank Camastro and Brian Flannery were selected for the All – Tournament team.
The JV basketball team defeated St. John the Baptist on Saturday. David Crismali had 23 points and 7 rebounds. Menzo Tucker had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Elias Diaz had 8 points and 5 rebounds. Zach “Skywalker” Kisonas had 8 rebounds. Aaron Deleon played great defense and was awarded the Crusader “C”. The team showed clutch tplay the game by hitting 11 out of 14 foul shots in the last 2 minutes to win the game.
The JV basketball team had an impressive 53-50 victory over St. Edmund. Menzo Tucker had 8 points and 7 rebounds and consistently broke the St. Edmunds press. Elias Diaz had 6 points and hit a shot in the last two minutes to break a tie and give the Crusaders a lead they would not give up. David Crismali was the player of the game and earned the Crusader “C”. David had 33 points and 12 rebounds, and was uncoverable throughout the game.
The JV basketball team defeated the Avenue school. David Crismali had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Chris Chen powered his way to 8 points and 8 rebounds. Ronald Rodriguez contributed 6 points and good defense.
2015 – 2016
The JV basketball team lost to Sacred Heart on January 5th. The team fell behind early, then mounted a furious comeback that fell just short. Matt Smith and Daniel Berhan were high scorers with 8 points each. Matt contributed 11 rebounds and Daniel had 6. Sebastian Garzon and Anthony Camastro had 7 points each. Neil Hickey and Mike Remon had 6 points, and Neil also contributed 6 assists.
The JV Basketball team lost a tough game to Salesian. The team got off to a slow start before a second half comeback fell short. Dillon Ferdinand was the high scorer with 9 points and 4 steals. Daniel Berhan and Mike Remon both had 8 points and 5 steals. Jaryd Godette had 6 points and helped run the offense with his post passing. Neil Hickey and Anthony Camastro provided outstanding passing while Anthony Leone played outstanding defense. They play St. Johns Prep at St. Johns this Friday at 4:30pm. The next home game for JV will be Tuesday 1/19 against arch-rivals Regis at 4:30pm and Varsity at 6pm. Come out and support the Crusaders!

The JV Basketball team came in third place in the Martin Luther Tournament this past weekend. Freshman Matt Smith was the high scorer with 22 points and Dillion Fernadez chipped in with 12. Neil Hickey had 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Daniel Berhan had 6 points and 7 rebounds. On Saturday December 5th, the team defeated Martin Luther. Mike Remon had 18 point, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 10 steals. Both Neil Hickey and Matt Smith were named to the All-Tournament team.
The JV basketball team won its second game in a row on Wednesday by defeating St. Martin de Porres last night by the score of 68-59. Matt Smith had 21 points to be high scorer and also had 17 rebounds. Mike Remon had 12 points and had 5 assists. Nathaniel Espidol came up big in the clutch by going 9 for 9 from the foul line. Sebastian Garzon chipped in with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Neil Hickey had six points and 5 assists and provided great leadership breaking the press. They play Moore Catholic at home Monday at 5:30pm.
2014 – 2015

This past week, our basketball season came to an end as both the JV and Varsity teams were eliminated from the playoffs. With the season over, we wish to thank coaches Walsh, Doyle, Crimi, and Stark for their tremendous work, dedication, and example that they have shown this season. We are very proud of each of our players as they have each worked incredibly hard, six days a week, since the beginning of November. In a special way, we would like to acknowledge and thank our seniors who have worn their Cathedral basketball uniforms for the last time: Mark Boodram, Daniel Debiase, Brian McCormack, Sean McQuail, and Kevin Torres. You made us proud, men!
The JV basketball team lost a tough league game to Salesian in overtime. Mike Remon was high scorer with 16 points, and he hit a 3 pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Mike Bode contributed 7 points and 7 assists. Rich Marino had 6 points and 5 rebounds. Jose Velazquez had 15 points, 16 rebounds and 7 steals.
Cathedral JV Basketball Team Falls to La Salle
On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, the JV basketball team lost to La Salle Academy. Jose Velazquez stormed through the La Salle defense with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 6 steals. Adam Zajkowski struck with 6 points and 9 rebounds, most of them contested. Rich Marino chipped in with 11 points, while Mike Remon had 5 assists.
The JV squad’s next game is Friday, January 16th, vs. Salesian at Salesian @ 4:30PM.
2013 – 2014 Season SummaryThe JV Basketball Team had a great season, with several signature victories. The team was led by point guard and team co-captain by Sophomore Chris Mahon – Chris led the team in assists and deflections and was the team leader on the court. Junior Brian Hickey led the team in points, averaging over 8 per game and in defensive rebounds. Jose Velazquez led the team in rebounds and provided a strong inside presence. Rounding out the starters were Freshman Thomas Moore, who was second in scoring and led the team in charges drawn, and Sophomore Lenny Lynaugh, whose aggressive defense and moves to the hoop contributed to the team’s success. Sophomore Anthony Santagata contributed 100+ points and rebounds, while co-captain Sophomore Danny Goncalves provided tough defense, point guard play and leadership. Freshman Rich Marino contributed aggressive play and streaky 3 point shooting. Freshmen Mike Bode, Antonio Pazmino, Evan Sepulveda, Arthur Vollmerhausen and Ben Bercarcel rounded out the squad.The JV victory against Samuel J. Tilden High School was probably the most exciting game of the year. It was a back and forth contest, with the Cathedral JV pulling away at the end behind Chris Mahon’s 18 points. The JV won a game in the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) Tournament against St. Mary’s behind Thomas Moore’s 19 points. The league play started slowly, but the JV team got hot in the end. They won three of their last four. Included in this was a win over St. Edmund’s behind Lenny Lynaugh’s three point shooting and defense, shutting out St. Edmund’s best player in the second half! The JV lost a tough play-off game to La Salle despite 17 points and 13 rebounds by Brian Hickey.Coaches Crimi and Stark would like to thank the players for a great season and are looking forward to next season !
