Game Recaps

2018-19 Season

Even UP The Score  The Crusaders needed to bounce back after a tough defeat to Mary McDowell the other night. And bounce back is what they did. Returning from there retreat , Juniors Menzo and David got the call to put a spark in the team. This was there 1st game as Varsity players and the nerves were showing. Sebastian G was the difference maker with 5 3pointers in route to a  12 point victory.

Saturday at home
The Crusaders held host to St. John the Baptist. After a 14 pt loss last year the Crusaders were hoping to change that outcome around. Unfortunately, that would not be the case. The 60-45 loss drop the Crusaders to 1-2 on the year. Anthony Leone led the team with 17 points. Defensively they were sparked by Matt Davies who took 2 charges. The last time a Cathedral player took 2 charges in a game was…… ( I’m still thinking). Off to St.Edmunds!!!

Road game vs an A division team
The Varsity boys played there best game of the season so far but were unable to get over the hump. The final outcome was 63-54 . Trailing the whole game did not stop the Crusaders from fighting back. They cut the deficit to 43-41 with 5 minutes but were never able to grab the lead. Juniors Menzo and David both poured in 17 pts. The Juniors came out of there shell. Next game a little road trip down Queens Blvd to play Molloy on Fri night at 7:30

The Varsity boys were looking to make it 2 in a row last night. Coming off an emotional win on Monday against Xaverian they were ready for a battle against St. Johns Prep. Unfortunately, The Crusders came up a bit short, 77 -75 in overtime. This is the 2nd game in which they lost in OT. They were led by Anthony Leone, who had 20 pts, hitting 4 3-pointers and playing excellent defense. Mikey Remon played another sound game with 18 pts and 3 assists. Foul trouble was an issue for Matt Smith and Yann Camara but that did not stop them from playing aggressive. Matt finished with 11 pts, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Yann had 4 pts and 7 rebounds. The Crusaders will try torebound on Friday at home against our rival REGIS at 6 pm.

The Boys Varsity basketball won yesterday on a game winning 3 pointer by Anthony Leone. It was the 3rd win of the season, as they defeated Xaverian 59-56. This was a revenge game, since Xaverian beat the Crusaders last month in overtime in the Jim Dilg tournament. Mikey Remon played well pouring in 22 pts and 5 assists. The team is happy to have Remon back after he sat out 3 weeks with an ankle injury. Leone finished with 12 points and Matt Smith had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. The Crusaders will be home tomorrow at 4 pm against Saint Johns  Prep.

It was a rough week for the  Varsity team , losing to both Salesian and Moore Catholic. The next game will be at Saint John the Baptist on Sat 12/16. JV at 1pm followed by Varsity at 3. Hopefully the Crusaders can turn things around quickly because La Salle is looming soon.

It was a rough weekend for the Crusaders! The boys varsity got swept in the Martin Luther tournament.

Saturday night was a nightmare. The Crusaders came out flat and were never in the game. They lost to Martin Luther 71-38. They were led by Emmanuel and Sebastian each with 10 pts. Unfortunately, the Crusaders had more turnovers than pts.
Sunday was a winnable came, but the Crusaders fell short losing to Kew Forest 63-58. Matthew Smith led the team with 19 pts and 6 rebounds. This brings the varsity to a 1-3 record. The next game is home against Salesian on Tuesday 12/12. We hope the the school will come out and the support the boys basketball team.
Yesterday, the Crusaders suffered their 1st loss of the season. They were defeated 59-53 to “The Avenue School” in the championship game of their tournament. The boys struggled through the 1st three quarters, unable to hit many shots. Then a light bulb went off in their heads. Trailing by 20 points entering the 4th quarter, the Crusaders put on a surge to cut the deficit to 5 with 2 minutes left. Unfortunately, that was as close as they came. The Varsity’s next game is December 2nd at Martin Luther High School. Junior, Matthew Smith, led the team with 15 points, and 6 rebounds.

The Crusaders started the season off on a high note as they defeated Calhoun High School last night 58-55 in “The Avenues” pre season tournament.

The team was short handed due to the fact that the Juniors were on retreat, so it was time for the Seniors to shine as well as a couple of Sophomores. All eight players played a major role in the victory.

It didn’t start out well as they fell behind early 13-4. But, Mikey Remon drained a few 3 pointers. The Crusaders still trailed by 1 pt . The 2nd half was a whole new game. The Crusaders went out of the zone and into man defense. They created steals and easy baskets. They built a 13 point lead only to see it dwindle down to 1 pt with 2 minutes left. But, the Crusaders showed the toughness and pulled out a hard fought win. Coach Naumann and Kondyra were proud by the effoert the team showed. Once again, this is a new era for Cathedral Prep Varsity Basketball.

Varsity will look to bring home a championship tomorrow as they play “The Avenue School.”
