SUMMER READING LIST FOR STUDENTS

2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR

Dear Student:

As you continue your studies here at Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary, you will be expected to do a considerable amount of reading and writing both inside and outside of the classroom. While our academic program may teach you how to read and write, you yourself must also acquire and practice the habit of intelligent reading to insure your future success in high school, college, and all endeavors. There is no better way to improve your reading comprehension, analytical, and writing skills and to broaden your vocabulary than by constant and focused reading.

With this in mind, below you will find the list of required reading for this summer. We strongly recommend that you read every day in order to complete the assigned reading. It is expected that you will have read all of the books before school begins.

In September, your teachers will test you and ask you to write essays on your reading. While you are not required to write any book reports over the summer, we strongly encourage you to take notes as you read in order to prepare for the tests you will complete and the essays that you will write for each novel. All of the test questions and essay topics will deal with the major parts of the novels (e.g. the characters, plots, climaxes, and themes of the novels), so again we strongly encourage you take notes based on these guidelines as you read.

Enjoy your vacation, and we encourage you to make reading part of that enjoyment.
