Saint Matthew Society

On April 7th, Cathedral Prep hosted the 9th Annual Saint Matthew Society Mass & Networking Dinner.

The mission of the society is to encourage people to come together and share their talents, whether personal or business, with our Cathedral alumni and friends. Our second objective is to raise funds for tuition assistance and scholarships for students attending Cathedral as each year the need for tuition assistance and scholarships grows.

The evening started off in the Chapel at our “Table of Plenty.” Mass was said by Fr. Joseph Fonti, Rector – President, ’84, and concelebrated by Fr. Sean Magaldi, son of alumnus, Gerry Magaldi, `74, followed by a cocktail hour and a homemade gourmet dinner. The meal was prepared by several alumni, including master chef Billy Caruana, ’72, Fr. Fonti, ’84, Ana Reagan, Allen Spiro, ’75, Leon Terrano, ’74, Tom Powers, Jerry Magaldi, ’74, Matt Dybus, ’11, and 15 of our current Cathedral students.

Deacon Ralph Edel, ’08, gave a blessing, and then a short video produced by Tim Harfmann, ’10, was shown on the history of Cathedral.

This dinner could not have happened without the generous support of our alumni and friends, especially sponsorships by George Jathas, President of Card Processing, and Steve Davis, President of EFT Network.

Fr. Fonti, ’84, and Gerry Magaldi, ’74, Chairman of the St. Matthew Society, spoke of the wonderful tradition, success, and servants Cathedral Prep (established in 1914) has helped form for the church and community, and thanked all those who attended and support our Men for Greatness.

This event is one of our biggest fundraisers, and everyone who joined us was impressed not only by the food, but also by our mission and the character of our Cathedral men.

If you have not already given, please consider giving to the Saint Matthew Society Tuition Assistance Fund (click: Donation to make an online gift). Your generosity is appreciated and each gift makes a difference in the life of our Cathedral young men.

Also, please feel free to contact Tim McCleary, Director of Development at the Advancement Office at 718-592-6800, ext 120, Email:, or by mail: Cathedral Prep, 56-25 92nd Street, Elmhurst, NY 11373, if you would like to discuss establishing a scholarship or help fund a Cathedral student’s tuition.

Thank you.
